In many companies, ISO 9001, ISO 27001 or NIS2 are seen as a major project that ties up months and still ends up in a folder. So it gets postponed – until a customer asks for a certificate, a tender requires one or a law makes it mandatory.

That experience is justified. Traditional projects start with a template manual nobody in the company recognises. Then come workshops, spreadsheets and versions sent by e-mail. Evidence is gathered just before the audit. After that the system falls asleep until the next surveillance audit comes round.

Yet the core of these standards is not complicated. They require a company to know what it wants to protect or assure, which risks exist, who is responsible for what and how it improves. The problem is rarely the content but the organisation around it: who does what by when, where the current evidence is, what has changed since the last audit.
